On The Grounds

At the hotel cotopaxi most people's priorities seem to be showers and food after a couple hard days of trekking or climbing but you don't need to restrict yourself to the bathroom and dining hall. Get to know our animals. What says "Ecuador" more than a picture of a llama with a volcano in the background? We have eight llamas, two alpacas, and one horse on the grounds.

Ask about the ravine walk. Our property includes a heavily vegetated ravine that stands in stark contrast to the rest of the countryside. Because of protection from the elements and flowing water, walking through the ravine is much more akin to high altitude cloud forest than the paramo. It is a pleasant 20 minute loop hike.

Machachi

Machachi is only a short bus ride away. Any bus travelling north on the highway will pass the town. Just ask the driver to let you off at Machachi. It is only about a kilometer into town from where the bus leaves you.

Things to see include the central square and the extravagantly decorated church and it's gilded altar. There is a daily market that spills into the streets on Sundays as one of Ecuador's largest and is certainly worth a visit. On or around the 23rd of July the festival of El Chagra occurs. Chagras are Andean cowboys and the festival is celebrated with parades and rodeos as you might expect. This is also the place to eat cuy, or guinea pig, if you have not tried it already. Visit one of the local eateries in the market with cuyes grilling outside. Because this is not a heavily touristed town (unless you are a mountain climber) roast cuy can be had for $5.
